Review: Zipp VukaShift Extensions

Las extensiones de manillar aerodinámico Zipp VukaShift son increíbles. En pocas palabras, integran palancas de cambio y extensiones de una manera que antes no era posible. Pero para comprender realmente por qué son tan geniales, primero debemos comprender el problema que intentan resolver.

Las extensiones de Aerobar muchas veces no son más que una idea de último momento. O peor aún, no están involucrados en absoluto en el proceso de pensamiento del ciclista. Joey Triathlete entra a la tienda de bicicletas (o más probablemente, inicia sesión en una tienda en línea), compra las aerobarras que cree que son las mejores y simplemente toma las extensiones que vienen en la barra. ¿Quién puede decir que esas extensiones incluso funcionan bien ergonómicamente en la barra que vienen con ellas? ¿Quién puede decir que funcionarán bien para Joey?

Las extensiones son necesariamente una parte de toda la construcción frontal, que para un triatleta se trata de tres cosas: la ubicación de las almohadillas, la ubicación de las palancas de cambio y la forma de la extensión entre ellas. La mayoría de las veces, esos tres elementos funcionan de forma totalmente independiente uno del otro: las pastillas están atornilladas a algo, las extensiones están atornilladas a algo y las palancas de cambio están atornilladas a algo que se atornilla a las extensiones. Estos elementos dispares pueden confabularse o no para proporcionar una buena experiencia ergonómica al ciclista. Y el hecho de que una aerobarra venga de serie como un sistema completo no significa que sea ergonómicamente buena. ¿Pero qué es bueno?

Ergonomía Ideal

El consenso general es que lo ideal es que las palancas de cambio estén ubicadas cerca del mismo plano horizontal que la parte superior de las almohadillas para los brazos. Algunos prefieren las palancas de cambio un poco más bajas, otros un poco más arriba. Preferimos que queden ligeramente más altos que las almohadillas, uno o dos centímetros. Lo ideal es que las extensiones se inclinen ligeramente hacia arriba antes de llegar a tus manos, formando una pequeña curva en tu mano. Algunos ciclistas prefieren tener un poco más de pendiente en sus manos, otros menos pendiente.

Esto fue parte del impulso del diseño para las primeras extensiones S-bend. Al usar una curva, en lugar de una curva cerrada, los ciclistas podían seleccionar la cantidad de pendiente que querían en la mano agarrando una parte diferente de la extensión. Además, moverse un poco hacia adelante y hacia atrás durante el viaje no significaba que tuviera que estirarse o acurrucarse; simplemente cambie su agarre en la curva en S y aún estará relativamente cómodo. Con una curva en J pronunciada, cualquier movimiento hacia adelante y hacia atrás requiere prácticamente un compromiso en la posición de las manos o del cuerpo. Pero la ventaja que ofrece la curva en S tenía su propio compromiso, es decir, que las palancas de cambio no pueden estar en tu mano a menos que te guste NO tener curvas en tu mano. Esto se debe a que el jefe de cambio requirió que la extensión fuera plana unos 4 cm aproximadamente para acomodar el enchufe. Por lo tanto, las palancas de cambio estarían fuera de tu alcance si te gusta tener alguna curva en la mano. Pero tener cambiaformas en la mano es muy superior a tener que estirar la mano para agarrarlos. Extender la mano hace que los cambios sean más lentos, compromete su posición y requiere más esfuerzo. Una extensión ideal le permite tener una pequeña pendiente de extensión en la mano Y aún así sujetar las palancas de cambio.

Hay un par de tipos de extensiones que hacen esto bien. Los F-Bends de Felt hacen esto, pero requieren que tengas aproximadamente una pulgada de pila de almohadillas para alinear todo. Las curvas en J tradicionales se adaptan bastante bien, si le gusta tener una pendiente extrema en sus manos y no le importa poder moverse mucho hacia adelante y hacia atrás. Los ciclistas que disfrutan de los beneficios ergonómicos de las curvas en S nunca han tenido una buena solución para sujetar las palancas de cambio. Hasta que Zipp lanzó las extensiones VukaShift.
