Triathlon brands frequently look outside our industry for inspiration and innovation in creating new products. And the world of Indy car racing world is quite often the source of that inspiration. Do these claims sound familiar? "Our new high modulus carbon comes straight from an F1 cockpit" ... or "we now have a proprietary resin used originally from Indy cars." Well, today's feature is about a rider who doesn't merely claim to have been inspired by the ultra-high-end world of Indy cars; Tony Kanaan is an Indy Car racer. To be clear, he races IZOD IndyCar, which is NOT the same as F1, but we thought the title was catchier as "from F1 to T1". His team, Andretti Autosport, is home to some of the fastest drivers on the planet, Kanaan among them. In 2009, he had three podium finishes in the most expensive, competitive sport in the world.

And Tony loves triathlon. He even jokes that his Indy career is messing up his triathlon career. With so much at stake in IndyCar racing, Tony can't compete in triathlons during the Indy season. But he certainly stays in shape. One quick look at the attached gallery will attest to that fact.

Getting the best:

Tony wanted to upgrade his old bike, and chose the new Trek Speed Concept. To make sure he was properly fit, he flew out from Miami to visit the Retul studio in Boulder. Kanaan stayed for several days, to get some rides in on his new position, and make sure he was perfectly dialed before going back home. Tony's choices are a testament to both the bike he is riding, and the competency of the fitters at Retul. And he's quite serious about his (triathlon) racing: Kanaan is shooting for a 4:45 finish at Clearwater this year.
