World Champs 12-Hour TT: Nick Legan's Speedmax CF
Nick Legan is one of the most eclectic and experienced names in cycling that you might not have heard of. He wrenched for many years as a Pro Tour mechanic with the likes of CSC, RadioShack, and others. He has since become a journalist working with VeloNews, MTBR, and others. He's even written a complete guide to Gravel Cycling, and races in all kinds of events. Suffice it to say, he knows a lot about gear. Next month he will compete in the 6-12-24 Hour World Time Trial Championships. (Nick is going to compete in the 12-hour race). So that's an uninterrupted 12 hours of riding, and Nick wants his gear to be perfect. He called us up for some help with the build of his race rig, the Canyon Speedmax CF 8.0 Di2.
Nick has been working with Ivan O'Gorman, one of the most experienced and well-respected fitters in the business. When contemplating the build for the TT, both Nick and Ivan were excited about our own Alpha One bars, which offered a feature unique among bars: the ability to make instant on-the-fly position changes. If Nick finds himself 6 hours into his race wanting just a tad more stack, he can add it with a single turn of a 4mm hex wrench. He was also eager to clean up the front end of the Speedmax, which had a standard stem, bars, and clip-on extensions when we got to it. And of course, he was eager to swap out the standard Ultegra brakes for our Omega X.
Check out the video above for some feedback from Nick and Ivan about this rig, and the process of fitting on Alpha One. And check the gallery below for lots of detail shots of the bike. Also, Nick will be writing about his race experience on BikeRadar.com, so stay tuned there for more info about this rig, its rider, and their date with destiny.
