Rudy Project Windmax Review

Aunque podría escribir sobre cascos aerodinámicos todo el día, sería negligente si no dedicara algo de atención a sus hermanos estándar y ventilados. Los cascos de carretera habituales son sin lugar a dudas parte del triatlón. Ya sea que simplemente entrenes con ellos o optes por competir con ellos también (como lo hacen muchos ciclistas), es importante tener una tapa que te quede bien y que te mantenga cómodo durante mucho tiempo.

Personalmente he estado entrenando con un Bell Sweep R durante muchas temporadas y definitivamente me gusta el casco. Mi cabeza de 59 cm está justo en el medio de su rango de tamaño, lo que suele ser un buen indicador de ajuste. Pero, por desgracia, el casco ha llegado a su fecha de caducidad. Los fabricantes recomiendan cambiar los cascos aproximadamente cada cinco años, para que la espuma del casco no se vuelva quebradiza y pierda su capacidad de amortiguar adecuadamente un impacto. Esa es una recomendación que no estoy dispuesto a desafiar con el propósito de realizar pruebas.

Entonces, la buena gente de Rudy Project me envió su nuevo casco Windmax para que lo revisara, que llegará a las tiendas a principios de 2012. Cuando abrí la caja por primera vez, estaba un poco preocupado: me habían enviado la talla S/M. , que corresponde a un tamaño máximo de cabeza de 58 cm, apenas por debajo de mis 59 cm. Pero el siguiente tamaño va de 59 cm a 63 cm, por lo que estaría en el extremo inferior de ese rango y probablemente sentiría que el casco era muy grande. Por lo general, querrás encontrar un casco que te coloque en algún lugar en el medio de su rango de tamaño, no en los extremos. La historia corta es que en realidad NO soy el candidato ideal para este casco.

Pero al final realmente me gustó de todos modos.

Como era de esperar, el casco queda ajustado cuando me lo pongo, incluso con el mecanismo de retención completamente abierto. Pero en este caso fue algo bueno. Significa que no tengo que usar ninguna retención, porque la tapa se queda puesta incluso haciendo una prueba de inclinación sin abrocharla. Y a pesar de que debería sentirme apretado, resultó ser muy cómodo. De hecho, durante mi primer viaje de prueba con el casco, dos veces tuve un pedo cerebral, pensando que me había olvidado de ponerme el casco. No fue hasta que estiré la mano para asegurarme que me di cuenta de que efectivamente estaba montando la Windmax.

El casco viene con algunas características estándar: un mecanismo de trinquete en la parte posterior que funciona más o menos como se esperaba (quizás no tan suave como otros trinquetes, pero no hay nada de qué preocuparse), mucha ventilación (22 respiraderos en total) y una correa para la barbilla fácil de ajustar. La correa de la barbilla también tiene un pequeño acolchado que evita que la hebilla roce tu cuello, pero no me importó mucho y me la quité.

El Windmax también incluye un "Bug Shield" extraíble, un inserto de malla que cubre la mitad delantera del casco y, con suerte, evitará que los insectos entren en su cabello. Realmente no he tenido muchos problemas con los insectos en el pasado, porque cualquiera que entraba en las rejillas de ventilación generalmente volvía a salir volando. Pero es una buena opción tenerla. Y si no te gusta, puedes eliminarlo. El mío se queda puesto por ahora.

No dudo en recomendar la tapa a cualquier ciclista que la ajuste. A $299 al por menor, definitivamente es un cubo caro. Y no se equivoque: cada casco certificado lo mantendrá seguro. No tienes que gastar mucho dinero para proteger tu cabeza. Los cascos a estos precios están destinados a venderle su ventilación ligeramente mejor y ganarle algunos puntos de estilo. El Windmax tiene ambos en abundancia. Elegirlo sobre otras ofertas de los principales fabricantes de cascos debería depender del que mejor se adapte a sus necesidades.
