Zipp Vuka Alumina Review

Las aerobarras son quizás mi categoría favorita de equipamiento de triatlón. Y las ofertas de la industria parecen mejorar cada vez más a medida que pasan los años. Estoy emocionado de poder echar un vistazo completo a la nueva oferta de Zipp para 2012, la línea Vuka Alumina. En esencia, Vuka Alumina presenta una barra base económica, en la que puede colocar un nuevo conjunto de clips que aceptarán cualquier extensión de 22,2 mm. Bastante simple, ¿verdad?

Además, como los clips son simplemente abrazaderas de barra redonda, funcionarán en cualquier barra de 31,8 mm, como la Vuka Bull de carbono de Zipp. Y también aceptarán extensiones de carbono (que también fabrica Zipp). Entonces, desde el punto de vista del presupuesto, puedes hacer un sistema completo por alrededor de $255, que pesa alrededor de 700 gramos y tiene tanta o más capacidad de ajuste que cualquier otra cosa en el mercado. Gaste un poco más en extensiones o barras de carbono y podrá reducir el peso a unos 620 gramos. Puede que la configuración general no sea la solución más aerodinámica que existe, pero sigue siendo muy limpia y MUY ajustable.

Pero esos son sólo números y una visión general del sistema. ¿Cómo es realmente esta configuración? ¿Cuáles son sus méritos únicos? En resumen, en realidad no hay nada sorprendentemente nuevo en ninguna de estas partes. Más bien, la configuración de Vuka Alumina representa un sistema muy refinado y bien pensado que funciona de manera muy coherente consigo mismo y también encaja muy bien dentro de un ecosistema más amplio. En la página siguiente, comenzaremos a profundizar en el nuevo sistema. Pero antes de llegar allí, tengo que abordar algo que puede resultar muy confuso para los no iniciados, respecto a los estándares de extensión.

El Debacle de 22mm

Hay una situación un poco extraña en la industria en lo que respecta a las extensiones de aerobar. Verá, hay muchas extensiones basadas en el llamado "estándar de 22 mm", pero el problema es que en realidad hay tres estándares: 22,0 mm, 22,1 mm y 22,2 mm. Y aunque sólo 0,2 mm separan los tres tipos, puede causar problemas dependiendo de lo que estés usando. Por ejemplo, el Vuka Clip original de Zipp se construyó para aceptar barras de 22,0 mm y tuvo dificultades para abrirse lo suficiente como para aceptar los tipos más grandes. Tendrías que lijar las barras o correr el riesgo de dañarlas cuando tuvieras dificultades para encajarlas en los clips. Por otro lado, intentar utilizar una barra de 22,0 mm en un puerto diseñado para aceptar los tipos más grandes podría provocar que la barra se deslice. Estos problemas no siempre surgen, pero cuando lo hacen, son bastante molestos.

El nuevo clip Vuka Alumina, así como todas las nuevas extensiones, están construidos alrededor de un diseño de 22,2 mm. La posición oficial de Zipp es que hay que utilizar extensiones de 22,2 mm y que las versiones más pequeñas no son compatibles. Sin embargo, en mi experiencia personal, PUEDES usar las extensiones más pequeñas sin problemas. Probé hasta 22,0 mm y los clips no se deslizaron. Pero si decide mezclar y combinar, tenga en cuenta los posibles peligros.
