FLO Cycling Production Wheels

L'année dernière, j'ai eu le privilège de rédiger la première évaluation approfondie au monde des roues aérodynamiques de FLO Cycling. Les roues que j'ai reçues étaient des échantillons de prototypes, mais représentaient un produit entièrement fini et utilisable. Le produit FLO représente quelque chose de nouveau et d'unique dans l'industrie du cyclisme : un jeu de roues aérodynamiques abordables avec un pedigree de conception hautement technique. Fondamentalement, ils ont des cerveaux de grande qualité avec les prix des collèges communautaires.

De nombreux athlètes ont attendu patiemment pendant que FLO franchissait les obstacles en matière de production, faisant face à un revers après l'autre. Mais les fondateurs de FLO, Chris et Jon Thornham, ont persévéré et les roues sont enfin là. Encore une fois, j'ai le privilège de vous montrer quelques tout premiers échantillons de leur ligne de production finale.

Qualité de production + Changements

Pour la plupart, ces roues correspondent exactement à ce que j’ai examiné auparavant. Une large jante en alliage s'insère dans les moyeux exclusifs de FLO via des rayons Sapim CX-Ray conformes aux normes de l'industrie. Les jantes sont couplées à un carénage en fibre de carbone qui crée un large profil toroïdal qui commence au bord d'attaque du pneu et se termine par le bord intérieur arrondi qui est la marque de la tendance des jantes larges. Comme d’autres fabricants l’ont clairement indiqué, cette réflexion se prête à des roues dotées de prouesses aérodynamiques inédites et d’une maniabilité exceptionnelle par vent traversier. D'après mon expérience, j'ai découvert que le battage médiatique marketing était vrai.

La plus grande différence entre les cerceaux prototypes que j’ai examinés et l’échantillon de production est le raffinement global. Les carénages sont désormais parfaitement lisses sur toute la longueur du flanc, et certains problèmes de construction très mineurs présents dans les prototypes ont désormais disparu. Les trous des rayons, surdimensionnés sur les échantillons de production, sont devenus plus petits pour éliminer les écarts inutiles. Ces roues sont prêtes à rivaliser avec à peu près tout ce qui se trouve sur les étagères des magasins en termes de qualité de production.

Mais il y a un problème que j'ai remarqué et que les lecteurs voudront connaître. Sur les jantes prototypes, les carénages en carbone présentaient quelques imperfections sur les bords, qui étaient exposées car les carénages étaient simplement collés sur le bord extérieur des jantes en alliage. Les nouvelles roues utilisent un processus beaucoup plus intelligent dans lequel le carénage glisse dans une petite fente juste en dessous des jantes, de sorte que le bord soit caché et que la liaison soit plus sécurisée.

Cependant, cela signifie qu'il y a un tout petit retrait entre la jante et le carénage (on parle de 0,5 mm). Elle est illustrée à côté de ce paragraphe, et l'image donne en fait l'impression que l'écart est plus grand qu'il ne l'est. Quoi qu'il en soit, parce que l'aérodynamique est un sujet curieux et que tout changement peut introduire des effets involontaires et même contre-intuitifs, j'ai demandé aux ingénieurs de FLO s'ils avaient réfléchi aux conséquences de ce changement sur l'aérodynamique de la roue.

Ainsi, le fondateur de FLO, Jon Thornham, est retourné consciencieusement pour faire une autre série de CFD avec la forme finale et a constaté qu'« il y avait une différence de 0,013 % entre le FLO 90 et le FLO 60, en réalité amélioré de 0,021 % ». Donc, cela s’est avéré être beaucoup de bruit pour rien, mais je savais que les geeks de l’aéro pointilleux parmi vous voudraient savoir.

FLO a déjà commencé à vendre ces roues directement via son site Web, et ils les expédieront sous peu. Je peux vous dire que ces roues valent la peine d'être examinées, surtout si vous n'êtes pas préoccupé par le poids des roues, qui est le principal inconvénient d'un produit par ailleurs convaincant. FLO a un brillant avenir devant elle et je prédis que vous en entendrez beaucoup plus parler au fil de l'année.
