Os equipamentos vencedores em Kona 2013

Uma das minhas coisas favoritas para fazer todo ano é dar uma olhada nas bikes que vencem o Ironman World Championships em Kona, Havaí. Qual bike pertence ao vencedor é uma confluência de muitos fatores, incluindo a carreira do ciclista (que determina quais empresas de bike podem até mesmo patrocinar aquele atleta em particular), o ciclo de vida do produto atual da empresa de bike (e se há algo totalmente novo que eles poderiam dar ao ciclista), a competição de outras marcas de bike (que pode influenciar o que cada empresa está desenvolvendo em um dado momento), etc.

No primeiro ano em que cobrimos o Havaí, Chris McCormack venceu a bordo da Shiv de primeira versão minimalista e linda. Foi a primeira vez em vários anos que uma construção tão minimalista venceu a corrida. No ano seguinte, outra Shiv levou o título, desta vez a versão tri-específica que conhecemos hoje. Em ambos os anos, a humilde Cannondale Slice levou o título no lado feminino, primeiro sob Mirinda Carfrae e depois Chrissie Wellington. As plataformas vencedoras do ano passado definitivamente não foram as máquinas mais legais do campo. Pete Jacobs venceu a bordo da Boardman AiR TT e Leanda Cave na Pinarello Graal. Na minha opinião, a característica mais marcante de ambas as bicicletas é o gerenciamento de cabos dianteiros bagunçado. A Boardman tem aquele laço desagradável de cabo para o freio sidepull, e a Graal tem cabos em todos os lugares (como uma observação lateral, a nova TTE da Boardman é uma melhoria dramática e, na verdade, muito legal - realmente espero avaliar uma em um futuro próximo).

Frederik Van Lierde venceu a bordo do Cervelo P5

Este ano é um verdadeiro retorno à forma. Frederik Van Lierde está na Cervelo P5, um equipamento muito bom sobre o qual escrevemos vários artigos, incluindo uma construção personalizada muito elegante. E a Felt IA de Mirinda Carfrae pode ter reivindicado ser a bicicleta de triatlo mais rápida já feita. Fizemos questão de fornecer uma cobertura séria quando a IA foi lançada, e estamos de olho nela desde então. A vitória em Kona deste ano é uma grande validação para o mais novo carro-chefe da Felt, e sua vantagem aerodinâmica pode ter sido uma parte real da vitória de Carfrae, permitindo que ela limitasse suas perdas de bicicleta para a potência do ciclismo Caroline Steffen.

Mas o aspecto mais significativo desses equipamentos não são seus freios integrados, ou seus cabos ocultos, ou seus aerobares extravagantes. Na minha opinião, o item mais digno de notícia aqui é o fato de que ambas as bicicletas são ilegais para correr sob as regras da UCI. No caso da P5, isso mal é verdade, já que pode ser legalizada trocando o garfo. Mas a bicicleta de Rinny é uma bicicleta tri-específica do zero que SÓ pode ser usada onde as limitações da UCI não se aplicam. Vimos outro design tri-específico recentemente, quando Craig Alexander levou o título de 2011 a bordo da Specialized Shiv construída para triatlo. Mas este ano prova que a Shiv não foi um acaso. Os fabricantes finalmente chegaram à decisão de que os heróis do triatlo são grandes o suficiente para vender quadros sozinhos, e que nosso esporte não precisa mais aproveitar a onda da Pro Peloton. Você pode ver isso em todo o campo profissional, com todos os tipos de designs tri-específicos. E este ano, pela primeira vez, essa tendência chegou ao degrau mais alto do pódio, tanto para homens quanto para mulheres.

Mais do que tudo, estou simplesmente encantado em ver peças de equipamento tão avançadas e elegantes sob os atletas que venceram este ano.
